COAST FINISHING exclusively uses modern, durable, and environmentally conscious acrylic coatings for all of our finishing projects. Water based acrylics offer superior performance to traditional solvent borne lacquers and enamels in several ways:LIGHTFASTNESS: Solvent borne coatings yellow over time - especially the lighter range of colors. And after just a few years of initial application, the color change can be quite stark. Also, the yellowing is dependent on the quality of ambient light, which means that different parts of a room will discolor at varying rates. Water based Acrylics do not yellow, so the finish remains true to the original color selection.DURABILITY: Modern Acrylic coatings rival the hardness and durability of solvent borne coatings. Traditional coatings become brittle over time, which leads to finish failure like chipping and flaking. Acrylics maintain their flexibility, while providing outstanding film hardness and superior moisture resistance.INDOOR AIR QUALITY: Traditional lacquers and enamels depend on a cocktail of harsh, high VOC* solvents for their performance characteristics. These solvents off-gas into surrounding spaces over time, compromising healthy indoor air. This is why solvent based coatings are being phased out : Since 2004 the EPA has banned Oil Based Paints in six states. They include: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. California had banned high VOC materials years earlier.COAST FINISHING only uses cabinet industry grade finishes.
Paint dealers and big box stores are now marketing their trim enamels as cabinet coatings. The more popular enamels are an oil / water hybrid that actually yellows over time. And while water based paints have improved considerably over the years, and they can be used for cabinet applications, they are not made to withstand years of daily use.
Cabinet specific acrylic coatings are challenging to use, are more effort to source, and require specialized equipment to apply. Our system passes the KCMA* test, which consists of exposure to a variety of solvents and household cleaners, and is the benchmark for coatings durability.COAST FINISHING uses HVLP* spray technology to apply a furniture grade finish to all of our projects. HVLP provides precision control, which allows for minimal airborne overspray. In addition to the high transfer efficiency* of HVLP, we install a dust barrier during the painting process to protect the surrounding areas. And our compressed air system ensures a superior leveling that turbine and electric systems cannot match.* In paint, VOCs ( volatile organic compounds) are additives or solvents, such as mineral spirits, naptha, lacquer thinner, dryers, oils, and alcohol.* Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association* High Volume Low Pressure* Transfer efficiency refers to the amount of a coating product that adheres to a surface, and is not lost in the spraying process.

My name is John Brice, and I am the owner of Coast Finishing. While an Art student at the University of Georgia, I worked part time in the restoration business to pay for tuition. After finishing my Fine Arts degree, and some graduate hours to earn my teachers certification, I taught middle school Art in the public school system. While an extremely rewarding profession, I missed the pride and satisfaction of working with my hands.After a few years back in Athens in the restoration trade, this time with my own business, I had the option to pursue opportunities here in Charleston. I have family all over the southeast, from North Carolina to Florida, and there is no city to compare to Charleston for its abundance of quality homes and architecture. It has been a pleasure to work in some truly beautiful homes surrounded by the gorgeous scenery of the South Carolina lowcountry.
